WRAP-UP LUGLIO 2025

E anche questo mese è finito lettor*!
Come sono andate le vostre letture? Ecco qui un riassunto delle nostre. Chissà se ne abbiamo qualcuna in comune 🧡

CAMILLA

- EGOTISTICAL PUCKBOY di Eden Finley & Saxon James - 4 stelle!
Hockey MM romance, enemies to lovers con friends with benefits.

- LEAVE ME BEHIND di K.M. Moronova - 3.25 stelle!
No.

- THE BOOK OF AZRAEL di Amber V. Nicole - 4 stelle!

- EMPIRE OF HATE di Rina Kent - 4 stelle!

- THE BLOOD WE CRAVE: Part One di Monty Jay - 4 stelle!

- EMPIRE OF LUST di Rina Kent - 3.75 stelle!

CHIARA

- A DANCE OF LIES di Brittney Arena - 4.75 stelle! (ARC)

- THE ROBIN ON THE OAK THRONE (Oak&Holly Circle,#2) di K.A.Linde - 3.25 stelle!

- HEIR OF STORMS (Storm Weavers,#1) di Lauryn Hamilton Murray - voto 4.5 stelle! (ARC)

- THE LONG GAME (Green Oak, #1) di Elena Armas - 4.5 stelle!

Who knows!

- THE PARADISE PROBLEM di Christina Lauren - 4.5 stelle!

ERIKA

Qualche nuovo preferito?

[ARC Review] Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

Hello readers!

How are you?

It's been a while I've written something for the English section of the blog, so I had to make amends and what better occasion than talking about one of my most anticipated 2023 books?! Less than two weeks from now the conclusion of this amazing duology will be released and I'm so excited to finally have it in my hands! That's why I'm honored that Little Brown Book group gave me the chance to read this book in advance (and thanks to Netgalley too of course) so I can present it to you.

Title: Two Twisted Crowns (The Shepherd King,#2)
Author: Rachel Gilling
Publishing Date: 19 Oct 2023
Publisher:  Orbit (Little Brown Book group)
Pages: 368 (paperback)
Price:
17,09$ (*according to Amazon.com)

Plot: **Since it's a sequel, be aware there will be spoilers related to the previous book**

In the luscious, dark sequel to One Dark Window, Elspeth must face the consequences of what she's wrought - perfect for readers of Hannah Whitten's For the Wolf and Alexis Henderson's The Year of the Witching.

Elspeth and Ravyn have gathered most of the twelve Providence Cards, but the last, and most important one remains to be found: The Twin Alders.

If they are going to find it before the Solstice and cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it, they will need to journey beyond the dangerous mist-cloaked forest that surrounds their kingdom.

And the only one who can lead them there is the monster that shares Elspeth's head. The Nightmare. And he's not eager to share any longer.

Review:

5 stars!

To anyone who's every felt lost in a wood. There is a strange sort of findings in losing.

As I've already mentioned above, Two Twisted Crowns was one of my most expected books of 2023 after falling in love with One Dark Window last year, so I shuddered to read it after THAT final cliffhanger (because this author is a master at endings and breaking hearts).

I have to say that this novel was everything I needed from this series and even more. I missed the One Dark Window's characters SO much and, even if an year has passed, it was easy to come back to their stories, magistrally woven together by Rachel Gillig's poetic writing style. It was like entering in a dark, gothic story, where you can feel that cold sensation of danger surrounded by shadows that could hit you in every moment. I love think kind of atmosphere, when the story comes alive and you just live it with the characters (and deeply suffer with them, thank you for that too, Rachel).

Just when I think you're getting torelable, you go and open your mouth.

Anyway, this is not an easy book to face, but that was already clear with One Dark Window for the themes treated and the violence portraited, but I really appreciated the sensibility with which the author wrote certain scenes. It's sad to see how low people value human's life, especially if it isn't theirs, and Rachel Gillig showed it so well in her stories, where in the end everyone got what they deserved.

My heart broke multiple times for Elm and Ione, not to mention Elspeth and Ravyn who, together with the Nightmare, still hold my soul in their hands. What an unexpected and "funny" triangle they were! They drew me a smile multiple times. I really appreciated how the Shepherd King interacted with Ravyn and the others, along with his affection for Elspeth.

That said, it's true that the main characters of the first book left a good amount of space to two "new ones", and even if I understand Rachel's choice, because it's useful to the story, I missed my Captain of the Destriers and the Girl with a monster inside her as primal protagonists and also together! 😢 They have one of the most beautiful relationship I've ever read. But, I repeat myself, it's an understandlable decision and it makes sense once you arrive at the end, because multiple knots had to be unraveled, and the readers already know Elspeth and Ravyn's love is truth. They didn't have to prove it more than they already did, they just had to stay alive so they could be reunited.

Clever man died on their own terms. And if they were wary, clever, and good, they perhaps died in piece. He, apparently, was none of the three.

However, it was impossible not to be dragged in that grim and dark atmosphere that accompanies the quest for the search of The Twins Alders card and the resistance of who stays "behind", dotted with entertaining moments and lovely ones that made me smile. They created a good rhythm with revelations and bigger events, that I personally found irresistible.
Praise also to the fact that finally there is a book with a proper ending, that gives the ultimate confrontation with the villain its space to unravel. I couldn't ask for more and I think this has just become one of my favorite duologies ever. Now, the problem is: how can I image not to read about those characters anymore? (so if Rachel will gave us in the future some extra scenes I will love her until the end of times).

I hope you enjoyed this review and please, read this duology!
I can't wait to read what you think about it.

To the next review!

Recensione:

Voto: 3.25 stelle!

Daniel (no-last-name) is a sexy, shirtless, six-pack wielding heartthrob who is also...dead.
He isn't living. He isn't breathing. He's a ghost. He's also the only man on the planet that Jillian can talk to.
Soon, Daniel's convinced that it's his afterlife mission to resurrect Jillian's love life. He knows, if he helps her fall in love then he can move on. Jillian agrees. The last thing she needs is a Lothario ghost haunting her living room.
But then, one practice date leads to another, one confession leads to more, and suddenly Jillian fears she's falling for the one man she can never love.

Review:

Rating: 3.25 stars!

Just Like Heaven meets The Lake House in the new Sarah Ready’s book, Ghosted.

I really liked the idea of the novel. Even if ghosts are a little bit more used in romance stories nowadays, Ready created interesting characters that stand out.

Jillian is a journalist that write suggestions for the love life of people, even if she never had one and she can’t talk with men (like at all! She just freezes). Enter Daniel, our without a t-shirt ghost that “infest” Jillian’s new apartment. He doesn’t remember anything about his life except for his name. Also he didn’t take well the be dead part of the ghost thing.

The start of their relationship is a little rough, but then Daniel understand that the motive because he is still here is because he has to help Jillian with her love life.

I enjoyed reading the scenes between the two protagonists, but I think that the evolution of their relationship is really fast. I would have preferred a slow burn.

The dialogues are catchy and they say the right things, but a lot of the time it feels that all is concentrated on the sexual site of the relationship. I didn’t really like this, especially because of how Jillian is presented at the start of the book and the fact that he is a ghost. I think that the stories with this kind of plot have the possibility to concentrate on a more emotional bond between the characters, that unfortunately I didn’t see here.

At half of the book the story takes a direction that I didn't see coming. On one hand this can explain why their relationship is a lot rushed at the start, on the other hand I believe that the book could have been divided into two novels, so that a lot of plot points could have been expanded. Because a lot of moments or changes happened too fast and without a consistent consideration.

The book also talks about the subject of “mate” or “predestinated people”, but not often. I think that if this concept had been more expanded it could have explained why they fall in love so quickly.

The paranormal part of the book is interpreted in a scientific way. The writer make you believe in the story and why ghosts exist.

The secondary characters are also interesting and they make the story more real. I would love to read their stories someday.

I found the audiobook of Ghosted really enjoyable.

The story is interesting and you want to go on for understand what happened to Daniel and if they will have their happy ending.

I would have preferred a slower relationship, but they are really cute together.

First of all:

Happy release day, Amanda!

I was so curious when Berkley contacted me to join this Blog Tour, because I never heard about this book before. So, convincted by the plot, I decided to read it asap and.. it was love. Since the first lines the writing style of Amanda Elliot captured me. It's entertaining, fresh and so vivid that you can't love it and feel the urge to keep going.

The story itself is quite simple, but I've ADORED it. As a fan of cooking tv shows like Masterchef or Bake Off, it was really interesting to see this kind of competitions described in a book. It's a treaky element to use in a novel, because you can fail being too boring for presenting too many details, or being excessively superficial, just mentioning some aspects without being able to create the right atmosphere for the reader. That is extremely important, because if there's a competition who reads needs to feel it and being involved (in this case) in the creation of the plates, in the rush to finish all on time and in the anticipation to see who will win and who will go home. Amanda Elliot has been very good in this. The scenes are not extremely long, but at the same time I was completely absorbed. I rooted for Sadie (and other partecipants) since the very beginning and it was fun but also interesting to see her growth through her plates.

Talking about the main character, I've appreciated Sadie with her strengths and weaknesses. She's a spontaneous and an easygoing person, but at the same time she struggles with the idea of not being liked or not sparkle enough, missing the fact that her gentleness and presence are something that can't be ignored by other people. Plus, she often forget she has a strong personality, that make her fight not only for what she wants, but also for what she thinks it's right. That's why, even person she doesn't like or with whom she's not particularly friendly, appreciate her. And talking about that, one of the things I've loved the most about her it's the fact she's not perfect. She misunderstands situations, she misreads people and she makes mistakes, but that allows her to mature and become a better person.
I have also to mention what has happened to her in the recent past, an event that is so disgusting just thinking about it but that unfortunately is something that in real life happens. Taking advantage of someone and their insecurities and then discrediting them in front of everyone is disgusting, and Amanda Elliot has portraited well, without speculating in drama (something I hate to see in a book).

Another figure I have to mention is Luke. I fell hard for him, really. He's an amazing character and every interaction with Sadie kept me hooked on the book. Easygoing, kind and very concrete, I enjoyed his presence in the story like a sort of "solid and safe haven" for Sadie, even when things between them were cold. I really liked his background too, and the only thing I missed was more time (and so pages) to see him to mature his own decisions - and yes, more romantic moments. I craved them!

All the other characters create a sort of colorful pattern that gives more authenticity to this story, and I've found myself affectionated to some of them too. I've also really appreciated the choice to give to all of the contestants different kinds of cuisine that are influenced by their personal tastes, their origins and backgrounds. Sadie, for example, presents her personal reinterpretation of Jewish cuisine and it was really interesting to imagine all those beautiful plates (I envied the judges A LOT) that could be different from a "tipical" starred cooking style.

What can I say more?
Since, as I said, I missed some more scenes with Luke, and I would have loved to have him as main character too, I'm really hoping Amanda will gift us with another book (or short novellas?). In the meantime I absolutely suggest you to read this beautiful romantic comedy, amazingly written, that will entertain you and keep you company with laughs and more thoughtful moments.

Review: "TWICE SHY" by Sarah Hogle

Hi readers!!💙 How are you?
I know, our blog is mainly written in Italian but we think, from time to time, to add something in English too, especially when it comes to books that stole our heart or we really want to talk about!

What has moved me, this time?
Well, this year I made a list of ALL the books I wanted to catch up (new or from the last year) and since I was enamoured of "You deserved each other" by Sarah Hogle - which I totally recommend if you haven't read it yet, I was eager to get my hands on her second novel. So, thank you so much @prhinternational for the free book in exchange of an honest review.

But first, some practical informations:

Title:
Twice Shy
Author: Sarah Hogle
Publishing Date: April, 6th, 2021
Publisher:  Putnam Pub Group
Pages: 308
Price: 15,07 €

Plot:Maybell Parrish has always been a dreamer. But living with her head in the clouds has always felt preferable to dealing with reality, whether it's managing her panic attacks, navigating the wild world of dating apps, or getting her coworkers to show her a little respect. So when Maybell inherits a stately old Tennessee manor from her eccentric Great Aunt Violet, she realizes it's the perfect opportunity to make a fresh start, and finally take control of the life that's making her increasingly unhappy.

But when she arrives at her new home, it seems her troubles have only just begun. Not only is the manor practically falling apart around her, but its handsome yet reclusive groundskeeper, Wesley Koehler, who lives in a cabin on the property, seems to want nothing to do with her. Worse still, Great Aunt Violet left Maybell a bucket list of tasks she has only six months to complete if she wants to retain control of the estate--and Maybell won't be able to tick off all the items without Wesley's help.

Convincing the taciturn Wesley to stop avoiding her is a task more formidable than anything on Great Aunt Violet's list. But when Maybell discovers that beneath his brooding exterior lies an anxiety that exceeds her own, she realizes they might have more in common than she ever dreamed. And as the two slowly begin to let down their guards, they just might learn that sometimes the smallest steps outside one's comfort zone can lead to the greatest rewards.

 Review:

Rating: 5 stars! ⭐

I don't know how Sarah is capable of that, but she seems to create characters and stories that link immediately with me intimately and hit me hard for their concreteness.

I've adored this story.

It's completely different from “You deserve each other”, but it's still special in its unique way.

It's less hilarious, but it’s absolutely an enjoyable, sweet and tender journey that leads the reader to the path that links Maybell and Wesley together, and it’s SO adorable. It’s a twist of destiny that helps both to face their doubts and fears about themselves and the way to relate with another person.
It seems an easy thing to say, “I’m a shy person” or “I’m anxious”, but few people understand and really know what it really means. Sarah has been amazing to depict it in front of the reader without pity or faux stereotypes.

She shows Maybell’s fears, daydreaming (I’m so happy not to be the only one doing it!) and the growth of her self-confidence to express what she wants to do and what she feels, stopping to be overwhelmed by others personality and toxic presences. And then there’s Wesley. As per “You deserved each other” I ached for his point of view, but Sarah has been perfect in making us understand him step by step as our main character does. And he’s so sweet, so caring, he listens (thing not so obvious) and remember us that the male figure hasn’t always to be expansive, self-confident, and invincible to be a good person even before someone to fall in love. For me it’s impossible not to love him, and feel the heart tighten itself seeing his personal struggles.
The point is, you can empathize with them, you can see yourself in those two people, but even if you don’t because you have a different personality, this author has been amazing in making all of their feelings and worries tangibles through motions, words, actions.

Maybe it's stupid to say, but I'm proud of them both. They're two amazing people that have a big heart and they just needed the right push and time to understand they are two loving people, that deserve attention and care. They deserve someone that really look and listen to them and it has been amazing to see how gradually they came nearer and fell in love.

It's a slow story and someone could see there's not a climax. Well, maybe not in the usual way, but if I've learned something in the last years about books, you don't need an epic event to make a book work. Here there is a constant crescendo: even in moments you could see a potential fracture in their relationship, both choose the mature way to face the situation (and that is, in my opinion, something really peculiar because often drama is preferred) permitting their bond to grow stronger, so they can have the time and space (on the pages) to face other ghosts of theirs.

And then, the final chapters, left me in tears. I won’t make any spoilers, but let me say just other few things:

1.       the tension between those two has nearly killed me!

2.       I’m a Violet and Victor fan. Their story is so romantic!

    3.       I'm so curious about what will happen next!! The ending is so open-ended I'm biting my nails to            know more! :'(
Anyway, it's a price I'll pay forever if I can have and read another Sarah's book.

Thank you Sarah, again, for another beautiful book. It will be another story that takes place in my heart, absolutely.

And you, readers? Have you already read it? You would like to? Let me know and let's chat about it! 💓 And most of all, would you like to see more reviews in English? Let us know!
